Chandigarh to introduce preschool curriculum based on NCERT draft
– 24 January, 2019
Chandigarh is all set to roll out a ‘Preschool Curriculum’ planned by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) from the new academic session.
NCERT has drafted guidelines for preschool education and curriculum, to promote content-based learning opportunities for holistic development of children between three to six years of age. Chandigarh’s State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) has organised nursery teacher training (NTT) till 30 January, 2019, to induct the teachers into the preschool curriculum.
The draft curriculum emphasises on three goals to be achieved – key skills to be taught, pedagogical processes to be followed and early learning outcomes to be achieved. The curriculum also focuses on overall development by laying emphasis on good health and well-being of a child.
The curriculum highlights the following points:
The mother tongue or the home language of the child will be the medium of instruction in class.
Child-friendly indoor and outdoor environment with activity areas for art, science, music, math, etc. would be set up for the children.
Play materials and equipment have been suggested based on five domains – physical and motor development, social and emotional development, cognitive development, creative development and language, and literacy development.
The curriculum also suggests one teacher for every 20 children, with a helper for three to four-year olds.
Disability-friendly playground and materials.
Arrangement for children to take rest or nap.
Bathroom fixtures to be according to the height of the children. Doors should not have a self-latching system.
Play materials should not have loose parts.
